As many of you know, you can fly into the Boston Airport (or any airport closer to the ferry to get you to Martha’s Vineyard), rent a vehicle, and drive to catch the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. I was hearing none of that. I did not want to have to sweat the entire time praying my flight was on time so that I could timely rent my car and catch the ferry, which will not wait if your flight is delayed. We flew right into Martha’s Vineyard Airport, which was no stress. However, the airport is extremely small and is undergoing construction. Therefore, if you fly directly onto the Vineyard during the busy season (late July or August), then you might be a bit stressed at this small airport. However, we landed at the airport, I received my luggage and my rental car within 10 minutes, and we were on our way!
This is the airport, and it is tiny. If you notice on the right, construction is underway.

Interior of the airport

Construction is scheduled to be completed Spring 2028.

You literally walk off the plane outside and walk to a temporary tent, which is baggage claim.

Here is “baggage claim,” which is a couple of men sliding your luggage onto a table (and no, it is not a revolving belt like your traditional airport).

This is the car rental pickup. People warned me that if I rented from the Vineyard instead of flying into Boston and renting a car there, then I would overpay and receive an old vehicle. That was not the case. Yes, the rental was almost $100 more than another nearby airport, but by the time I pay $100 less for a rental that is not on the island, I am still paying for the ferry, gas to drive to the ferry, and losing several hours in the process. This was just easier for me, and I received a Subaru Accent with 1200 miles on the dash. I think it was less than a year old (or at least it looked and smelled new), and it was a comfortable ride during our stay. It was also easy on gas, and we only had to put $35 in the tank before we returned it.

This was a small Subaru SUV, which was great for driving on the Vineyard. Remember there are no red lights, and the fastest I drove was 45 mph the entire trip. We literally traveled to all of the cities and towns on the island in this car, and it used hardly any gas.

So, please know that if you are going to the Vineyard, you have options. You can fly into Boston or another major airport closer to the ferry and rent your car there. You can drive your car onto the ferry and take the ferry to the Vineyard. However, I think flying directly onto the Vineyard was perfect for me and my family. Deplaning, getting our luggage and the rental car was about 10 minutes, which could have been hours had we flown into another airport and taken the ferry over. Make the best choice for you and your family.
