My Fashion Icon

I love fashion from the 70’s and 80’s.  As many of you already know, most of today’s styles are from that era — platform shoes, wedges, rompers, flare leg pants, high rise pants, huge sunglasses, and the list goes on.  While visiting my parents a couple of weeks ago, I found some fun pictures of my mom from the 70’s and 80’s and just had to post them.  My mom made most of her clothes and God knows I wish I could sew and design my own clothes.

It’s sometimes difficult for me to find clothes in my size that I really love and that fit me well.  Whenever I had that problem, my mom whipped out the sewing machine and made a tailored dress, skirt, romper or whatever I needed for the occasion.  It was like having a personal tailor and I always received compliments when I wore clothes she designed.

I love this picture of my mom (left) and my aunt (right).  They look so stylish.  My mom made her outfit in this picture.  Check out the huge sunglasses.  My mom’s sunglasses have a pink tint and I wish I had a closeup of the details of the glasses.  They were gorgeous!  My mom is wearing Candies wedges and those were some of my favorite shoes.  I remember them vividly (the white wedge heel and the multicolored straps).

When I was a child, I used to walk around in my mom’s heels, but I must admit I also used to laugh at her huge sunglasses.  Sorry for the jokes about your sunglasses mom — I am now wearing huge sunglasses.

My mom also made this outfit (a navy skirt, satin camisole, and matching navy blazer).  This picture is from 1981.  Mom looks so sophisticated in this picture.  I love a nice, crisp navy suit. It’s so serious and sexy.

This was clearly from the 70’s!

My mom in a romper in the late 1970’s.

I have no idea why my mom (in the white skirt) and her friends took this picture, but it looks like something my friends and I would do today.  This is the era when women wore hosiery with everything.  My mom also made this pencil skirt and the short sleeve jacket, which you cannot see fully.  As a child, I remember the jacket was made from a silky material that was so feminine.

I always wanted to dress like my mom.  If she could have started a fashion/sewing blog in the 70’s, she probably would have.  Now that I’m older, I find myself dressing like her and acting like her.  Thanks mom for teaching me how to be classy, how to treat others, and how to make things happen!  I love you so much!

I also wished I could sew like my mother and my aunts. One of my aunts was too talented. She would sew WITHOUT a pattern! I *heart* these old pics!

Sometimes, I think I missed my calling. Maybe I should have been learning more about designing clothes from my mom than how to write legal memoranda. It’s funny people used to tell my mom she should have been a lawyer. Maybe she should have been the lawyer and I should have designed clothes.

Shayla, I think this is absolutely wonderful to post your Mom. My mom did not design clothes, however, she was truly my fashion icon! Her eye, attention to detail, and taste were impeccable! Everyone in the family, young & old wanted Dee to dress them. Hats off to the Mom’s who imparted their gifts into their daughters! Hats off to the daughters who embraced the gifts, & soared with them! Shayla, it’s never too late to pursue..do it!!!

Awe, thanks Arlette. I would be deadly with a sewing machine. I just might have to take some classes though.
